The Windautaler Radlrallye 2018

A mountain bike sprint race of a very special kind ...

... as described by some participants of the Windautaler Radlrallye, and not without reason: 14.21 kilometers and with 321 vertical meters, it is more or less, continuous uphill. Countless curves and different terrain call for demanding mountain biking. The highlight of this race remains the dreamlike route through the natural jewel of the Windauta Valley.
During the men's race last year, winner Georg Unterrainer secured the title hat-trik ahead of Manuel Pliem and David Schöggl. Manuela Hart from Germany triumphed in the ladies, for the fourth time in a row, beating HILLclimb winner Nadja Prieling and local hero Tina Kindlhofer in second and third place. In just under 27 minutes, the fastest riders arrived at the finish line at Gamskogelhütte in the beautiful Windautal. "top-class, exhausting and totally different, in comparison to the other races" recalled the newly crowned overall winner Georg Unterrainer. Unsurprisingly, as the participants are relatively close together until the very end, making for a very intense finish.

The Route ...

"Down along the stream, in the direction of Windau, a leisurely route takes you through the valley, inclucing, naturally, a few inclines,"mentions Peter (the Gamskogel hut owner- at the finish line). After all, the hut is located at around 1.100 meters above sea level.

After the start, which leads through the village center of Westendorf and past the golf course, begins the countless bends. The mountain bikers race through., and spectators at the side have brief moment in which to cheer them on. At the Rettenbach, shortly after the guest house Jägerhäusl, the route branches sharply left. From there, the really challenging part of the route begins. At the beginning, the route is slow. However the further you go in the direction of Gamskogelhütte, the steeper the route becomes.

In terms of scenery, the race is an absolute dream: Great views of the valley with lush alpine pastures, along the rushing Windauer river and past a thunderous waterfall. Even the rustic alpine buildings give the route its charm. The racers are thrilled every year by the unique backdrop of the Windautaler Radlrallye!
